Coronavirus advice for the AIT community

AIT is working with relevant Government departments and industry peak bodies to ensure that we are responding as quickly as possible to the rapidly changing global Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). First and foremost, our thoughts and best wishes are with anyone currently affected by the virus and their families.

Coronavirus advice for the AIT community

We have created this page to give you access to relevant information regarding the current situation globally and here in Australia. Australia is well placed to tackle the virus, with strict controls on our borders and health and quarantine policies in place to protect those currently unaffected by the virus and to keep them safe.

Australia should be seen as a safe travel destination and should not hold fear for those wanting to travel. In terms of border control and quarantine Australia remains one of the most protected and isolated countries in the world.

Fact Sheet - Identify The Symptons

Stop The Spread. Identify The Symptoms.

Helping to stop the spread of COVID-19 is something that we can all do. The Australian Government has developed this helpful infographic so you can understand and identify the symptoms of COVID-19.

If you become unwell and think you may have symptoms of COVID-19, seek medical attention. Call your local Medical Centre to book an appointment with a Doctor. Tell your Doctor about your symptoms, travel history and if you have had any recent contact with someone who has been diagnosed with the COVID-19.

For more information on COVID-19, contact your state public health agency:

Where can I find out more information on the coronavirus?
The Australian Government has implemented procedures aimed at reducing the spread of coronavirus. For up-to-date information see  The Department of Health, NSW Health and Victorian Health websites.
What should I do if I have recently returned from overseas?

If you have arrived in Australia from midnight 15 March 2020, you must self-isolate for 14 days.

If you have been in contact with a person with a confirmed coronavirus infection while they were infectious, you must self-isolate for 14 days after your last contact with that person.

What does self-isolation mean?

You should restrict activities outside your home, except for seeking medical care. You should not go to work, school, or public areas. You should not use public transportation, taxis or ride-sharing services.

When in self-isolation, you should monitor yourself for symptoms. Watch for:
• fever
• cough
• shortness of breath (difficulty breathing)
• other early symptoms (chills, body aches, sore throat, headache and runny nose, muscle pain or diarrhoea).

If you develop symptoms and it is a medical emergency (e.g. shortness of breath at rest or difficulty breathing) you should call 000. Alert ambulance staff of your travel/contact history.

How can I protect myself and others?
The World Health Organisation has developed helpful videos on the protective measures you can take against the new coronavirus.
What should I do if I am unable to return to Australia to continue studies due to COVID-19 travel restrictions?

We encourage you to contact AIT Student Services to discuss what options are available for you to defer your studies.

If you require additional time to complete your studies (beyond your visa expiry date) you will need to apply for a new student visa with a new Confirmation of Enrolment. Contact AIT Student Services for further details.

What measures are AIT taking on its campuses?

At this time, there have been no identified staff or students COVID-19 cases at any AIT campuses.

AIT made the proactive decision to suspend face-to-face classes from Wednesday 18 - 22 March and commence online classes on Monday 23 March. This means that our campuses in Sydney and Melbourne are now closed until further notice. The decision about when our campuses will reopen and face-to-face classes will resume will be informed by advice from the Australian Government and Health Authorities.

Is the Campus open?

From Wednesday 18 March the campuses will be indefinitely closed to students. We will continue to inform you of changes to campus accessibility as the situation changes. This decision will be informed by advice from the Australian Government and Health Authorities.
